backup-shipper
Encrypted off-site copies of a small server's backups.
backup-shipper is a private command-line tool. Each night it takes the backups that the apps on the burakmetehan.com.tr server make of themselves, encrypts them, and stores them in its owner's Google Drive, so they survive if the server is lost.
How it works
- Apps back themselves upEach app writes its own nightly backup on the server, as it always has.
- Encrypted on the serverbackup-shipper encrypts every file with age before it leaves the machine.
- Stored in Google DriveThe encrypted copy is uploaded to the owner's Drive, checked, and old copies are removed after a set time.
What it can access in Google
Only the files it creates itself. It asks for a single permission,
drive.file: “see, edit, create, and delete only the specific Google Drive files you use with this app.”
It cannot see, open or change any other file in the Drive.
Privacy and security
-
Unreadable to anyone but the owner. Files are encrypted before upload. The server holds only the public half of the key, so neither Google nor someone who breaks into the server can read the copies.
-
One user. backup-shipper is not a public service. There are no sign-ups and no other users; it works only with its owner's own Google account.
-
Nothing shared. No Google data is sold, shared with anyone, or used for anything other than storing and restoring these backups.
